The Chieftain Curse Chieftain Series Book 1 edition by Frances Housden Romance eBooks

I am a sucker for a highland romance, so I really wanted to like "The Chieftain's Curse." But, the book really just didn't do it for me. No spoiler here, at about 20 percent in, the heroine happily, eagerly becomes the H' s leman. This happens upon their first meeting, immediately after his wife dies in childbirth...this is the third wife he has lost in childbirth as well. I know that life was hard and short in this time period, but come on! He can't mourn just a little? What kind of man jumps right in bed with the first woman to come along? I just couldn't get past that. Other than their sexual connection, I didn't feel like the couple had a real connection. I didn't sense a friendship between them at all...it was just sex. They barely talked to each other. Also, what kind of 14 year old noble young lady has sex with a stranger in a cave? Wouldn't she be more protective of her virtue? Anyway, I am glad this book only cost me .99 cents. Not a keeper for me.

The Chieftain Curse Chieftain Series Book 1 edition by Frances Housden Romance eBooks Reviews

I enjoyed the characters and well-researched background of this novel. It lives up to its promise as a romance, but I was surprised when it turned into erotica. There's nothing wrong with well-written erotica, but I feel that some mention of this should be made in the blurb.
The amount of time and editing put into the book shows. Well done.
You get alittle of everything in this book, hot sex, tragedy, heartache, plot twists and HEA. Usually when books are filled with a lot of lovemaking, that is the main story, but not with this book, there is a unique storyline. Like another reviewer stated, he buries his 3rd wife and baby that morning, and is in bed with our h that night. I had to keep reminding myself, the times were different then. Some parts you will figure out, and then there are the parts that will hit you like a two by four between the eyes, and you will say DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING!! I am not going to repeat the premise of the story, but it is an enjoyable read, the ending is very suspenseful and I do recommend this book. I also, ordered the next in the series, so enjoy a wonderful adventure. (ljb)
I truly enjoyed this book. I thought that the characters were developed very well and the research into this time period was evident. There are a lot of historical romances I have read that the author used 21st century language and it was irritating to say the least.
Euan was a clan chieftain who was cursed by a witch in that he would bury every wife and son born to him. It held true until Morag came into his life. She was a woman who needed sanctuary and since their encounter years earlier, he was the first person she had thought of. With no marriage vows spoken, they embark on a journey to dispel the curse put on him. This was a thoroughly enjoyable book and I will definitely read the rest of the series. Good work!
Frances Housden is a good writer and I must admitt this is the first of her books I have read. I am a lover of highland romances and have read so many that I am always on the lookout for new authors however I just could not finish The Chieftains Curse. This book was just to dark, it is extremely depressing. After reading about half of the book I realized I was forcing myself to continue and could not find any enjoyment in what I had read. I read about 4 to 5 books a week mainly historical romances and spend enough on them it takes a lot for me to not finish one.
I will say very truthfully that for her to write a book that I could not finish because it drew me in and depressed me that much she is a excellent writer and if you are a lover of the darker hopelessness in your books you will love this book. I however don't think I will risk my limited resources to try another one of her books.
Fourteen-year-old Morag, in scouring a battlefield for her beloved brother finds instead one of the enemy still alive, sixteen-year-old Euan, whom she nurses back to health in secret in a cave. Naive decisions made while in the flush of youth had long and dire repercussions for both Morag and Euan, but they are drawn together once again as if fate was allowing them a second chance, but would they be brave enough to take it? There are such old deep wounds on both sides of this story, Morag’s resentment of Euan’s desertion all those years ago and the curse that Euan believes has taken all his wives and sons since, that it was understandable that misunderstandings abounded between them, but I did wish it could have been otherwise. This more than most other historical romances I’ve read, really captured the harsh realities of a medieval life and displayed it’s effect on a romance of the time, with all the ugliness and beauty it might have contained, without trying to sanitize it overly much. Moving story, and I look forward to reading Gavyn’s story in the next book in this series, Chieftain by Command.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable book. If you enjoy reading about people in relationships, this story is for you. Francis Housden should definitely continue in this genre as she could easily rival Kathryn LeVeque if she tried.

The story was well balanced, with ample attention paid to character development and motivations. The most important aspect of any H/h relationship is their thoughts, misconceptions, emotions – that’s what lends a story depth and makes it relatable. Ms. Housden gives us all that in great, juicy, emotional and sensual detail without being gratuitous, shallow or melodramatic. All of it is fully believable and in context.

She paid attention to historical detail, enough to paint a rich and believable picture of day to day life in those times. Political intrigue and battle scenes are not the focus of this tale. This book dwells primarily on the relationship of the H/h with just enough details about the secondary characters to make them interesting without distracting from her main theme.

While the outcome became somewhat obvious (but only close to the end of the book), she skillfully developed her multiple plotlines, intersecting them slowly and carefully.

As soon as I finished, I went looking for more of this genre from the author. Sadly, I did not find it, but I am hopeful she is busy working on another historical romance like this one.
