He shows how politics and the law so often inter-relate and sometimes converge, as when he takes part as a defender in a war crimes trial at The Hague, following the war in the former Yugoslavia, is involved in observing the birth of the first black government in South Africa, and as Chairman of the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading My Life in Crime. The author has sprinkled the narrative with a rich vein of interesting and amusing anecdotes
involving the famous, the infamous and lesser known people. With skilful writing he has conveyed a clear view of life at the coal face in both his professions. Other reviewers have emphasized the book’s interest for lawyers or politicians. As a member of neither group I found this account intriguing and recommend it unreservedly to lay readers. Perhaps unwittingly, his honest approach has left him open to detailed personal analysis. He creates a false veneer for himself but below that emerges the integrity of a strong and loyal character with a highly sentient soul. My favourite reading has always been auto-biographies and this one certainly hits the spot. It will take its place on my bookshelf alongside Bill Clinton’s My Life, Dennis Healey’s The Time of my Life, and Arthur Miller’s Timebends.
