THE HONORVERSE EXPANDS TO COMICS!

Based on the bestselling military science-fiction novels by David Weber, this original comic book series introduces spaceship captain Honor Harrington on the eve of her execution. From prison, Honor relays her epic adventures, starting with a command outpost to a hellish backwater star system that ends up being the linchpin of an interstellar crisis that will bring war to her home planet. This series is part of a new multi-platform story world that includes a mobile game app to be released with the first issue and a feature film currently in development.

I am a huge Honor Harrington Fan, and wish there had been more to this graphic novel. I realize that, as with movies, someone else's vision of people and places will not be the same as mine, however I am bitterly disappointed with the image of Nimitz. It bears no resemblance to the cover art from any of the books, and, in fact is hideous! The books always described tree cats as being almost cute, disarmingly so, hiding the fact that they are intelligent and can kill. No one would think that the creature in this novel was anything other than a vicious killer!

I will wait for the next installment and reserve judgement for now, but may end up preferring the original books and my own imagination.

Tales of Honor #1 eBook Matt Hawkins JungGeun Yoon Reviews

I'm giving this a middle of the road review because I have to view this on my phone since kindle for PC doesn't seem to support the format. The phone in portrait mode is way too small to do justice to the illustrations or the text. And since kindle for android doesn't seem to support scaling the picture or even rotation to landscape (to view 1/2 a page at a time), it's not very legible in several places.

With all these caveats, the illustration seems good & the story line is fine. If you've read most/all of the Honorverse, then the story makes a bit more sense, but even without that background, I think it's fine.

I wish the drawing of Nimitz wasn't so dark and tracked the descriptions in the novels more closely.
Ok, let me get this out of the way the artwork for Nimitz is bad. He is WAY too big. I cannot image that animal riding on any shoulders. It looks like trying to carry around a Labrador on your shoulder! I know Webber has said that creating Nimitz for the future movies has been a nightmare, and they are using the comics as a testing ground. My feeling is that the first test is a failure, if you are trying to follow the books. But if you divorce yourself from the books, he might just work.
That said, I liked this version of the story. I thought the art was good. Did it perfectly match my mental image? No, of course not. Was it just like the book descriptions? No. But I thought the art was good and captured the feel of the universe. I thought the dialog was a good adaptation of the book into a comic format. I also like the flashback version. I think it works to engage new people to the Harrington universe. I like this enough that I will buy the follow on issues.
OK, some of the bad. I'm not favorably impressed with the rendition of Nimitz. That kat looks to be closer to 40 kilos rather than 20, and I have reservations that any Grayson father would allow his children to play with him. I'll grant the possibility that what we are seeing is the mental image of him related to the situation that Honor is going through in the format of this graphic novelization, however I don't get the feeling that's what happened.

I'm also not satisfied with the uniforms. Perhaps I'm adversely affected by the experience of seeing people in what is accepted in the fan community as RCN uniforms, and the uniforms presented in the covers of the books, but there are characteristics of the uniforms as shown that don't fit the descriptions from the novels either.

All of that said, I realize that this presentation is not aimed at the already die hard fan of the series. From the perspective of the story being presented, I do like the format, and how true to the original story the presentation follows. My impression is that if this is a monthly or every other month publication, that the timeline of the story will play out nicely over the 6 years that the format suggests. Only time will tell whether we see a growth in the community as a result, but I do think that it stands a good chance.
So apparently this only renders in the most recent kindle updates, I guess I will have more to say after I finally break down and buy a new Ipad as mine is to old for the current kindle release. Sad that for no other reason than being 4 years old it is obsolete. I've been a reader for many years of the novels, and I believe they will need to get Nimitz right. I tracked down some photos from the comic at least on that. If it's as described by other readers, then I imagine honors father and many others would have shot them on site rather than allow their children to keep them as "pets" though we know the bond is deeper than that. If that fails then suspension of disbelief will break at some point and a lot of people will turn away before it gets started. I really can't see Honor keeping something that looks like what is drawn here, and I can easily imagine politics driving the Manticoran Navy to ban anyone that is paired with a treecat. It most certainly would not be allowed into the presence of a foreign head of state. Can you imagine someone taking a bobcat or a leopard on a diplomatic visit. "Leave the cats outside please" Try again with that, and fix it quickly before you mess up a group of new readers with an expectation that defies common sense, they won't be the ones paying to take the whole family to see it on the big screen and few believe this isn't part of the profit machine.
I was a little disappointed that David Weber allowed the artist and writer to stray so far from his technical vision. The ships lack the "hammerhead" ends that were a major design characteristic of Weber's ships. The version of Nimitz in the book would never be able to ride upon his person's shoulder and is not shown doing so. He was also described as a lovable (albeit dangerous) fur ball, this one looks like a hairless menace and is anything but lovable. I know that this book is aimed at a wide audience and so certain concessions must be made but Honor was nude when attacked at the academy and when being held in the cell on Ransom's ship. Small things but important to true fans of the Honorverse.
